Haagse Hopjes

Tin with real Hague hops. The candy is named after Baron Hendrik Hop (Breda, 27 October 1723 - The Hague, 29 April 1808), envoy of the States of Holland. When the French took Brussels in 1792, Hop was called back to The Hague, where he lived until 1801 above the confectioner's house of the firm Van Haaren & Nieuwerkerk on Lange Voorhout 92. The baron was addicted to coffee. The story is that one evening he left his cup of coffee with sugar and cream on the stove. The next morning it turned out to have become a caramel. Hop found those chunks of sugar with coffee flavor very tasty. A short time later, when he was no longer allowed to drink coffee from his doctor, he asked his neighbor, baker Theodorus van Haaren, to make those 'pieces of coffee' for him. They were soon called 'the chunks of baron Hop' and in 1880 they were given the name Haagsche Hopjes.
