The Burgenland is an elongated and narrow wine region from North to South. It is located in the far east of Austria, close to the Hungarian border. The area is almost flat (slightly hilly in the south) and is characterized by the Neusiedler See. This lake is a large swampy lake of 32 kilometers long and only 1 meter deep. A lot of sweet wine is made around the lake. Further south, a lot of red wine is mainly produced.
Because the region is so elongated and because about half of the area is around the lake and the other half is not, there are many types of soils in Burgenland. For example, we find sandy soils in the wine regions of Neusiedlersee and Neusiedlersee-Hügelland. Further south in Mittelburgenland, the soil is mainly made of clay with sand. In the small and mountainous Südburgenland, the soil is mainly made of weathered slate.
Despite the elongation of the area, the climate is virtually the same throughout the region. The climate is Pannonian, with long days full of sun. The temperature differences between day and night are not great, which makes it easy to let grapes ripen. The lake has a huge impact on the climate. It gives a high humidity in the wide area. Particularly in early fall, this causes mist in the morning. The conditions around the lake are therefore ideal for making sweet wines from noble rotten grapes.
Fragile fruit meets filigree texture. In between and beneath are multiple layers that are successively revealed. St. Laurent is a wine of nuances; its strengths are found in details. It is adverse to intrusiveness and seeks attention. Because behind all that elegance there are blossoms, hay, herbs and berries that delight the nose and palate. Playful and carefree lightness pairs with linear depth and expressive power.

Our decision to convert to bio-dynamic viticulture in 2006 was based on the goal of making our vineyards successively more resilient, more vital, and more heterogeneous.At the same time, we allow our wines and ourselves the freedom of increasingly less intervention. Regardless of the fact that all of our wines are fermented spontaneously and that we often like to leave them on the skins for weeks, it is above all else time that shapes our wines. Time for some means weeks, for others years – but all of our wines are given time with the intention of lending balance for their continued journey. To this end, wines remain unadulterated on their own lees, for the most part in used wooden barrels, and develop their own unique spectrum of aromas over time. We are mindful of these natural processes and observe them closely, but we influence them as little as possible, implementing our idea of producing authentic and truly genuine wines as rigorously as we can.
