Rust en Vrede Cabernet Sauvignon

Rust en Vrede Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep red, concentrated color of black currants. Brilliant in the glass. The nose is complex, with scents of vanilla and hints of game and blackcurrant. The taste is powerful and fruity, with a long finish and very balanced.

The Block 7 Syrah and Block 4 Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards were planted in Tukulu soil in 1998 and 2000 respectively. This soil comes from Helderberg granite and Table Mountain sandstone, with small deposits of ironstone. Tukulu soil retains water well, providing moderate stress during dry years. A higher amount of sandstone allows for more drainage, resulting in slow growth and more intense wines, carefully controlled and supplemented by drip irrigation.

The grapes grown on the estate are picked and sorted by hand. Each harvest plot is vinified separately. The grapes are then skinned, ground and pumped into open fermentation tanks, where they undergo a maceration period of fourteen to 21 days. This with a seven-day fermentation with pump-overs and manual punch-downs up to four times a day. The aging takes place in 100 percent French oak barrels for 22 months.

Rust en Vrede Wine Estate

For more than 320 years, Rust en Vrede winery has stood peacefully among the vineyards of Stellenbosch. Throughout the centuries there were periods when wine was produced, but since 1977 they have specialized in producing only red wine with an emphasis on Syrah, Cabernet and Merlot. Many honors have been bestowed on the estate and some of the more memorable ones were when Rust en Vrede was chosen by President Nelson Mandela to be served at the Nobel Peace Prize dinner and receive the Queen of Denmark for lunch with my family at the Manor House.

Rust en Vrede was nominated as the first South African red wine in the Top 100 Wines of the World and repeated this achievement for four consecutive years. Today, Rust en Vrede remains a fine example of what Stellenbosch stands for.
