Rust en Vrede Syrah is deep and light cherry red in color, it is a very concentrated wine. The bouquet is powerful and reminiscent of exotic wood, pepper, vanilla, spices and chocolate. The taste is elegant with a long finish that is complex and balanced. French and American oak have given the wine character and fullness. It is therefore one of the most beautiful of its kind.
The climate is that of the Mediterranean, with a rainfall of about 650 mm. per year. The vineyards, which are located on the northern slopes, benefit from being at the end of the valley, where it is slightly warmer. The bottom is deep red. It is a mixture of weathered granite and a small percentage of clay.
The grapes grown on the estate are picked and sorted by hand. Each harvest plot is vinified separately. The grapes are then skinned, ground and pumped into open fermentation tanks, where they undergo a maceration period of fourteen to 21 days. This with a seven-day fermentation with pump-overs and manual punch-downs up to four times a day. The aging takes place in 100 percent French oak barrels for 22 months.
This wine comes into its own when served with lamb and beef dishes.
Rust en Vrede Syrah is a delicious South African red wine from the Stellenbosch region South Africa. This wine is made from Syrah grapes by winery Rust en Vrede.
Recommended wine serving temperature between 16°C and 18°C.
For more than 320 years, Rust en Vrede winery has stood peacefully among the vineyards of Stellenbosch. Throughout the centuries there were periods when wine was produced, but since 1977 they have specialized in producing only red wine with an emphasis on Syrah, Cabernet and Merlot. Many honors have been bestowed on the estate and some of the more memorable ones were when Rust en Vrede was chosen by President Nelson Mandela to be served at the Nobel Peace Prize dinner and receive the Queen of Denmark for lunch with my family at the Manor House.
Rust en Vrede was nominated as the first South African red wine in the Top 100 Wines of the World and repeated this achievement for four consecutive years. Today, Rust en Vrede remains a fine example of what Stellenbosch stands for.
