Diemersfontein

Diemersfontein has belonged to the Sonnenberg family for 3 generations, dating back to the early 1940s. David’s grandfather, Max, bought the 183 hectare farm, which lies in the shadow of the majestic Hawekwa Mountains and boasts a panoramic view of both Du Toit’s Kloof and Bains’ Kloof mountain ranges. Central to the working wine estate, is the original family manor house, better known as the ‘Groot Huis’.

The Start

Richard Sonnenberg planted the first vineyards in the 1970s and in 2000 David built a cellar and started producing estate wines. Vineyard plantings include: Shiraz, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and also the “lesser known” varietals Viognier, Barbera, Roobernet and Mourvedre. Diemersfonteins’ maiden vintage (2001) won the Paul Sauer Trophy for a wooded Pinotage at the SA Young Wine Show, and today the Diemersfontein brand continues to enjoy the success in attaining numerous wine awards. Diemersfontein is a working wine estate, with a fully operational wine cellar, renowned for its award-winning Pinotage – a uniquely South African cultivar.
Only 5 minutes from the charming Boland town of Wellington, 45 minutes away from Cape Town, and 40 minutes from Cape Town International Airport, Diemersfontein is truly a world in one, within a wealth of possibilities literally on its doorstep.
