Julius Kleinhas been dedicated to wine production since 1788 with the goal of producing Grüner Veltliner at the highest level. Weingut Julius Klein is located about 50 kilometers north of the Danube and Vienna located in the province of Lower Austria wine-growing region of Weinviertel. With 18,000 hectares of vineyards, Weinviertel is also Austria's largest wine-growing region. The sloping hilly landscape has a climate that is quite cool and the terroir around Pernersdorf is determined by a relatively poor ling and lime soil, ideal for Grüner Veltliner.
Winemaking Philosophy of Klein
Our wine is a living element. It has developed its own strength, personality and essence - of the vines, soil, climate and the winemaker. The interplay of all these factors and elements create the crucial differences between the wines. Millions of years ago the primeval sea, the Tethys, formed the landscape of the country around Retz. Different soils were formed by weathering, runoff and wind drifts, providing optimal conditions for our vines. In the sedimentary rocks beneath our vineyards we still find shells, chalk and sea snails. The Weinviertel enjoys a relatively dry Pannonian climate, with cold winters and hot summers. Many hours of sun early in the spring and cool winds in the autumn allow the grapes to ripen ideally - perfect for the production of fruity, charismatic wines! Every year we look forward with great joy to the challenge of the vintage. We embrace both the experiences of our tradition and philosophy as well as the latest innovations.
