German Riesling

The Riesling grows in all German wine regions and covers an area of more than 21,000 hectares. That corresponds to approximately 20% of the total planting. Riesling plantings have increased by 5,000 hectares over the past twenty years, helping to regain first place ahead of Müller-Thurgau. All areas contribute to this, albeit in different sizes. In the Rheingau, the Riesling covers about 80% of the area available there with 2,420 hectares. Other important Riesling producers are the areas of Mosel (5200 hectares), Pfalz (5000 hectares), Rheinhessen (3200 hectares), Württemberg (2100 hectares), Baden (1200 hectares) and the Nahe (1000 hectares). In eleven of the thirteen German wine regions, Riesling is one of the classic grapes.
