The history of winery Gaja begins in 1859, the year in which Giovanni Gaja, a local grape grower in Barbaresco, Piedmont, founded a wine company under his own name. From 1961 is the Gaja company one of the wine producers who has ensured that Piedmont became famous in the international wine world. Giovanni Gaja did this entirely quirky and contemporary by following his own insights. He planted international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and was part of the Super Toscans in the 80's and 90's. The Super Toscans consisted of a group of winemakers who did not conform to Italian wine legislation at the time. He also reduced the yield per hectare by as much as half the number of permitted liters. The results are spectacular and Gaja conquers the world with his beautiful Barbaresco’s, the company's flagship product. The Nebbiolo grapes for Gaja's Barbaresco came traditionally from 14 different vineyards.

Daughters Gaia and Rosanna, now the fifth generation, of Angelo Gaja are now slowly taking over the business. Together with their brother Giovanni, they continue the family tradition to make exceptionally beautiful wines. They share the same values as those of their father and they enthusiastically work on innovative ideas to guarantee the quality of the wines on an ongoing basis.
