Vega Sicilia

Vega Sicilia

A dream come true

The driveway to Vega Sicilia, located in the western part of Ribera del Duero Spain, is flanked by the beautiful Japanese garden, where visitors are welcomed by the richness of bamboo, redwoods and maple trees. The elegant façade of the buildings, the main feature of which is the entrance to the chapel, is on the other side of the driveway.

If you come from the back of the building, you will arrive at the center of the wine company, a series of buildings with different production zones.

You first come to winery, with its stainless steel tanks, where the Valbuena 5 ° (which is 5 years old) is produced. The second floor is the home of the laboratory and the control room, where computer calculations are used to control all the processes needed to make the wines.

In the same building, but separated by huge sliding doors, there are 19 oak tanks where the wines with Único, made only in exceptional years and aged for at least 10 years, are fermented. In the next building the American oak barrels are made where the wines are stored. The bottling facilities are in the next building.

The domain consists of 250 hectares of vineyards. Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) is cultivated on 200 hectares and on the remaining 50 ha. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. 2200 sticks per hectare have been planted. The oldest vines are used for the Único, the other for the Valbuena. The latter also contains more Merlot than Cabernet Sauvignon, while the opposite applies to the Único.

The vineyards where the grapes come from are at an altitude of 700 meters. The summers are warm and dry, while the winters are often cold. There is always a risk of frost damage in this area in the spring. In bad years, no Vega Sicilia Único is marketed. The special soil structures in the area form the basis for large complex wines. The soil in the area is infertile, but varied. The infertility and variations of all those different soils produce particularly complex wines.

A Vega Sicilia wine is a natural wine. The wines undergo an exceptionally long aging process.
