Palacios

Alvaro Palacios

Álvaro Palacios was born into a family with nine children. Álvaro was the seventh and he was expected to go to Bordeaux to study oenology and viticulture. During an internship at Château Petrus he became fascinated by the special terroir and the greatness of the wine. Instead of returning to the family domain after his studies, he chooses to go his own way. In 1989, he joined a number of pioneers who pursue the revival of the Priorat vineyards. With a great sense of terroir, but also the age-old cultural landscape, Álvaro succeeds in making its Priorat wines a huge success. He starts another project together with Ricardo Perez, a cousin, who, like him, received his training in Bordeaux. This time his eye falls on the Bierzo wine region. Here they concentrate on the organic cultivation of the red Mencia grape. Its success reinforces the reputation of Álvaro. After the death of his father in 2000, at the request of the family, Álvaro also takes over the Palacios Remondo in Rioja Baja. He combines this with the attention for his wine company in Priorat and the company in Bierzo. Álvaro has taken drastic measures in the Rioja vineyards of the family. In a short time the production is reduced by 60% and he knows how to increase the quality more than correspondingly. In addition to paying attention to terroir, his belief in Garnacha is very remarkable for Rioja.

Álvaro Palacios is seen as one of the most talented and visionary winemakers in Spain.
