Alvaro Palacios was born into a family of nine children. Palacios Remondo is the name of the family business in Alfaro, Rioja Baja. Alvaro was seventh and was expected to go to Bordeaux to study oenology and viticulture. Through an internship at Chateau Petrus he became fascinated by the special terroir and the greatness of the wine. Instead of returning to the family domain after graduating, he chose to go his own way. In 1989 he joins some pioneers who are pursuing the revival of the Priorat vineyards. With a great feeling for the terroir, but also the ancient cultural landscape, Alvaro succeeds in making his Priorat wines an immense success. He starts another project together with Ricardo Perez, a cousin, who, like him, received his education in Bordeaux. This time his eye falls on the Bierzo wine region. Here they concentrate on the organic cultivation of the red Mencia grape. After the death of his father in 2000, Alvaro took over the Palacios Remondo in Rioja Baja at the request of the family. He combines this with the focus on his wine companies in Priorat and Bierzo. In the family's Rioja vineyards, Alvaro took drastic measures after his arrival. In a short time, production is reduced by 60% and he manages to increase quality. Besides attention to terroir, his belief in Garnacha for Rioja is very remarkable. Alvaro Palacios is considered one of Spain's most talented and visionary winemakers.
