Alto Adige

Italian Alto Adige wines

Alto Adige, also known as Südtirol, is a wine region located in the northernmost part of Italy, bordering Austria and Switzerland. Due to its location in the foothills of the Alps, the region benefits from a unique microclimate, with cool temperatures and significant diurnal temperature variations.

Alto Adige is known for its high quality white wines, especially those made from the Pinot Grigio and Gewürztraminer grape varieties. Pinot Grigio from Alto Adige is typically medium-bodied, with aromas of pear, apple and citrus, and a crisp, refreshing acidity. Gewürztraminer from Alto Adige is very aromatic, with flavors of lychee, rose and tropical fruit.

The region also produces excellent red wines, of which the Lagrein grape variety is the most important. These wines are full-bodied, with aromas of dark fruit, chocolate and spices. They are often aged in oak barrels to add complexity and depth.

In general, Alto Adige wines are known for their high quality and unique character, with a focus on fresh acidity, bright fruit flavors and balance.
